For instructors, divemasters and guides

Insured to teach and guide.

As a working pro you need professional liability (third-party) cover: it answers a claim against you, and it is separate from your own dive accident cover.

What it covers, and why.

Professional liability pays when someone says your teaching or guiding caused them harm or loss, and covers the cost of defending the claim.

A claim from a student or customerCover for legal costs and compensation if a diver brings a claim against you.
Shops often ask for proofMany dive shops and boats want to see valid cover before they let you teach or guide.
Some countries and agencies require itYour agency membership or the country you work in may make cover a condition of teaching.

What to check.

Policies differ a lot. These points decide whether yours works for the way you actually work.

Before you buy or renew

  • Territory: where you work, not only where you live. Some cover is limited to one country or region.
  • Activities: teaching, guiding, technical diving, freediving, pool or open water, whichever you do.
  • The limit per claim, and whether defence costs sit inside or on top of it.
  • Freelancers: that you are covered while working at several shops, not just one employer.
  • Claims made or occurrence: whether cover reaches back to past work (retroactive cover) and how long after you stop.
  • Your agency’s requirements: membership status, and any cover your agency expects at your level.
  • Your own accident cover is separate. See personal dive insurance for divers.

Where pros usually get it.

A neutral list with plain links. DiveHive earns nothing from any of them, and does not rank them.

  • Your training agency’s member programme

Many agencies arrange a professional liability programme for members, often one per region. Check your agency’s pro site.

  • DAN professional liability

Where your regional DAN offers it. Availability varies by region; the DAN professional programmes page is a starting point.

  • Local insurers or brokers

Insurers and brokers in your country that cover dive professionals. Ask what they require for diving.

DiveHive does not sell or broker insurance and gives no advice. Read the policy wording before you buy.

How DiveHive helps.

Keep your cover in one place and let the shops you work for see it.

Shops see your cover datesYour credentials and cover dates sit on your DiveHive pro profile, so a shop can check them before you start.
A reminder before it runs outYou get a reminder before your cover expires, so you do not teach on a lapsed policy.

Questions pros ask.

Write to hello@divehive.app if something is missing.

Is my dive accident insurance enough to work?

No. Dive accident insurance covers you if you are hurt. Professional liability covers claims made against you by someone else. Most working pros need both.

Does DiveHive sell or broker insurance?

No. DiveHive does not sell, quote or broker insurance and gives no advice. The page lists places pros commonly look, with no commission.

I work in several countries. What then?

Check the territory clause. Some policies cover most of the world except a few named countries, others only one region. Make sure every place you work is covered, and ask if it is not clear.
